The Iconic Puzzle Game Wouldn't Triumph at The Game Awards — A New Category Could Fix That

As any significant honors show draws close, there’s always a clamor for introducing fresh award types to recognize overlooked contributions and fill the passions of enthusiasts dedicated to specific genres.

Another commentator previously argued advocating for terror-themed awards. It would be amazing. The same goes for board games, representing a passionate advocate's mission. However, I must insist if I try to elbow in front just as with other single-minded supporters, I have a cast-iron argument backing this proposal stands as crucial above others. This is the request: We need a category for puzzle games.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Classifying creative works is not a science; opinions vary greatly, and it will always spark debates concluding with vague boundaries. It's understandable that movie academies don’t do it. But it is an unavoidable compromise within the realm of video games, that demonstrate such variety they barely qualify one unified medium.

To recognize the complete range of gaming accomplishments to receive acknowledgment, and for games of all stripes to have a chance for representation, genre categories are essential.

Existing Game Classification System

Prominent interactive entertainment events presently include award types recognizing Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Combat games, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Between them, these six categories effectively encompass many game types, allowing placement accommodating various experiences.

Different situation exists for puzzle games. There’s simply nowhere to accommodate them. Examine these examples from this year’s best games, all very different: the architectural riddles in a particular game, intense tile-matching in a different title, thought-provoking social scenarios from additional release. Where could they possibly go between these six categories? Unfortunately, nowhere.

Acknowledgment Issues

Many instances occur of brilliant puzzle games released every year that have no home at major award shows, if they accidentally match classification types such as Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, or the extremely competitive small studio competitions.

  • One classic puzzle game wasn’t nominated in any category during that awards season
  • Another creative title was excluded in 2019
  • Popular arranging title got ignored recently
  • Limited numbers of logic titles barely qualified for small studio or handheld classifications

Value of Brain-Teasers

These are often modest productions, however the design in brain-teasers carries substantial weight. Well-known matching games rank among most popular titles worldwide maintaining this status for over a decade.

The legendary block-stacking game rivals well-known building titles competing to become highest-selling title ever; it’s also in the running as greatest title ever. Puzzle games are foundational within interactive entertainment, while interacting across multiple categories.

The Solution and Justification

Logic titles wouldn't face that issue. You could fill a field of five with fascinating, diverse, deserving games each ceremony simply — actually, with challenge, given the need to exclude many worthy titles.

And to reiterate, these are games without proper classification at major gaming awards. Brain-teaser creators are working at the challenging frontier game development, producing among the purest expressions of gaming itself. Similar to film action specialists, they deserve recognition. Don't make them wait decades.
